Welcome to my web site. My name is John Dunlap and I'm so pleased you've
dropped by.
So who am I? A writer, editor, photographer and bon vivant. I am currently editor of a monthly magazine
for a national non-profit based in the Washington, DC, area. However, I live in Concord, North Carolina, near Charlotte, with
my wife.
I'm also writing a Civil War novel, a piece of historical fiction about my great-grandfather, a colonel
in the Confederacy who had some extraordinary events happen to him. Hopefully, the book will be completed and published soon...and
it has all the elements to be a great movie!
But it is my work as a photographer that has been immensely rewarding
over the years. It started with photo classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has continued non-stop
over three decades.
As you might imagine, having been a sports writer/editor, public relations man in motorsports
(for R.J. Reynolds and Dover International Speedway) and entertainment, I've had the oppportunity to attend a great many sporting
events and travel extensively. My cameras have always been with me.
Travel, in general, is a passion of mine, as
well...so you are apt to see photos from Ireland, France, Greece, Thailand and the Caribbean as well as photos from all
across the United States.
Since the very generous CBS Sunday
Morning feature about me ran recently, I've received a tremendous number of phone calls about my art and I'm only
too happy to talk about it. And, of course, I'm always happy to find new galleries in which to show my work.
Prior to moving to North Carolina, I lived in Dover, for 15 years in the Washington,
DC, area (where I was the Director of PR for Wolf Trap, a truly wonderful music venue as was a writer/editor for the national
publications Satellite DIRECT and Satellite ORBIT). I've also written for newspapers in Savannah,
GA, Pinehurst, NC, Danville, VA, and Fairfax, VA. I've won three first prizes for my sportswriting and editing from the
Virginia and North Carolina Press Associations.
Photographer:
I've had photos appear in daily and weekly newspapers and magazines like USA Today, The Philadelphia
Inquirer, Delaware Beach News, The Village Voice, The Vineyard Gazette (Martha's Vineyard),
Washington Times, Washington Flyer, WHERE Washington and numerous others.
The subject matter of my photo work (as you will see in this web presentation)
ranges from nature to sports to nudes. I count my prime photographic influences Edward Weston, Man Ray and Arnold Newman,
among others. And, as you may notice with the hand-manipulated Polaroids on this site, I have a deep and abiding love for
French Impressionism, particularly Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir and Modigliani.
Please peruse this site and, if you like my work, feel free to e-mail me tarheelsjhd@starpower.net to let me know. I do sell my work and will be happy to discuss it with you.
And don't forget that
all the photos on this web site are copyright protected and can not be used anywhere without my permission.
Cheers!
John Dunlap
